Lawns, defined as tightly clipped grass mono-cultures, are becoming increasingly at odds with the state of the planet's biosphere and the widespread loss of biodiversity we are witnessing. Because of this we fully support a growing global anti-lawn movement, which is particularly relevant to the more arid areas of the world, but also applies to a large extent to temperate climates like ours in the UK (plus us Brits exported the bloody things so we feel doubly responsible).
To clarify, it is probably fine to have a lawn for amenities (sport, etc). If you have the weather for it it's probably fine to have a bit of lawn at home to sit down and bask in the sun. And a non-irrigated mixed species lawn with a relaxed mowing regime can provide plenty of ecological services. This isn't about killing every lawn everywhere. It's about extensive lawns kept in the name of tidiness (the lawn and order brigade) or as a status symbol being replaced with biodiverse plantings that support a much wider range of plant, animal and fungi species so that we can begin to compensate for the enormous damage being caused by extensive industrial agriculture and unfettered urban development.
In support of this cause we have worked with the most excellent Ben Chlapek and Teagan White on these two KILL YOUR LAWN unisex t-shirt designs that we are selling throughout the month of May in order to help spread the message generally in aid of two worthy causes specifically: The Texas Thornscrub Sanctuary (being created by Joe Santore of Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't) and Rewilding Britain, a non-profit turning large swathes of nature depleted land into biodiversity hotspots in the British Isles. 100% of profits from the sale of these shirts will be donated 50/50 to these two projects at the start of June.
